When Roger and I get home later that afternoon, we’re both exhausted and filthy from picking up trash. We shower and decide to take a nap. When I wake up, I hear Owen walking around.

“Owen’s home,” I tell Roger as I check the time. “It’s after five. We slept for two hours.”

“We needed it,” he says, yawning. “That was a lot of work today.”

“I should go figure out dinner,” I say, getting up.

“Let’s go out. I don’t want you making dinner after all the work you did.”

“Good idea. I’ll go see if Owen will join us.” I leave the bedroom and go down to his room. “Owen?” I knock a few times.

He opens the door. “Hey, Mom. What do you need?”

“I was hoping you’d join us for dinner. Your dad and I are going out.”

“Um, yeah, okay. I just need to change.”

He’s still in his bike store T-shirt, which is covered in grease.

“How was work?”

“Good. I’m getting a raise.”

“Honey, that’s great! We should celebrate. How about you pick where we go tonight?”

“I want pizza. Can we go to that place in the strip mall?”

“Sure.” I pause, thinking of what Darcy told me earlier. “Speaking of the strip mall, Darcy mentioned she saw you there last week.”

He shrugs. “Yeah? What about it?”

“She said you were just hanging out there, watching the construction guys work. Is that true?”

“I wasn’t watching them work. I was sitting in my car, listening to music and looking at my phone.”

“Why would you do that at the strip mall?”

“Because I was bored and didn’t know where else to go. You don’t know what it’s like being a teenager in a small town. There’s nothing to do. I can’t hang out with Zoe anymore so I have to find stuff to do on my own.” He looks down at his shirt. “I need to clean up. When are we leaving?”

“In a few minutes. We’ll meet you downstairs.”

He closes his door as I go back down the hall.

“Owen got a raise,” I say to Roger as I go into the bedroom.

“That’s wonderful!” he says, putting on a button-up shirt. “We should celebrate.”

“We are. I told him we’re taking him to dinner. He wants to go to the pizza place in the strip mall.”

“We should go someplace nicer than that.”

“We could, but Owen really likes the pizza place.”

“Then that’s where we’ll go,” Roger says, coming over to give me a kiss. “Thank you for all your help today. We got a lot done. We might be finished sooner than I planned.”

I hope that’s the case, because then it will mean Roger will be home more. He’s been going to the park almost every night after dinner, delivering supplies or cleaning up the lot so it’ll be ready for when the trees arrive. I’m proud of him for doing this for the community, but I miss having him home. The sooner the park project is done, the better.
